Chris Thiel:

I’m Chris Thiel, I’m from Herington, Kansas, I’m a freshman majoring in health services management and community development with minors in chemistry and political science with emphasis in pre-med. I plan on attending medical school, and receiving an M.D., as well as a master’s in public health. I plan on working in the field of global health. In terms of involvement at SigEp, I am the Balanced Man Scholarship chairman, as well as the philanthropy chairman.

In terms of campus involvement, I’m in the Student Government Association, I’m Greek Relations Chair for Interfraternity Council, Shocker Freshman Council, the Honors College, Shocker Sound, the Health Occupation Students of America, and the HEALTH student organization. I also work with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and I work as a CNA/EMT.

My Balanced Man Scholarship Experience:

It gave me the opportunity to connect with Sigma Phi Epsilon and to meet and connect with all the amazing people that make up SigEp. The scholarship has helped me grow as a balanced man by helping me manage my work life, school life, and personal life. Without the Balanced Man Scholarship, I most likely wouldn’t have joined Greek Life, and that has been the best decision that I have made since coming to college.

Ryan Pfaff

My name is Ryan Pfaff; I’m from Rose Hill, Kansas; I’m a freshman with an undecided major; and after college I hope to return to Oklahoma City, where I was born, find a job within my chosen career field, and start a family. As far as my involvement in SigEp goes, I was the SongFest Captain during the 2016 Fall semester; as well as participating in volleyball, basketball, and dodgeball in intramural sports. And currently for the 2017 calendar year I am the Vice President of Communications within the fraternity. I also helped on Move-In Day by giving assistance to students living in the dorms during the move-in process. As far as my involvement in the community, I help lead a middle school youth group at my church, as well as helping the teachers where my mother works and spend time with the kids doing fun activities.

My Balanced Man Scholarship Experience:

If I had to describe my experience as a winner of the scholarship, I would say that it definitely opened a lot of doors for me, and helped me decide where I wanted to attend college. The scholarship also helped me get better connected with old friends on campus, and introduced me to Greek Life and SigEp. Going through the process and being able to receive this scholarship opened my eyes, and encouraged me to try and help others to apply for this as well, so that they can get the same sort of opportunities that I’ve had. The Balanced Man Scholarship really helped me gain some perspective on all the hard work I’ve done, the grades I earned in high school and the community service I performed, as well as the leadership positions I took, really did help me to become a more balanced man.
